Innocent's ethiscore fell from 12.5 to 6.5 yesterday following news that Coca-Cola had bought a stake of around 20% in the company. Ethiscore is a score out of twenty awarded by Ethical Consumer magazine for a company's performance against a range of social and environmental issues.
According to Rob Harrison, editor of the magazine, "Innocent was never the most ethical smoothie company...this accolade went to companies using extensively fairtrade or organic ingredients. Innocent did however have a distinct social mission which may be eroded on this new partnership with Coca-Cola."
Coca-Cola have been criticised particularly for links with:
- water extraction impacts on local communities in developing countries
- suppression of trade union activity in Colombia
- sale of unhealthy drinks products to children.

Re: Innocent smoothies' ethiscore cut by half
That's them off my shopping list! Companies like Coca Cola and L'Oreal (buying Body Shop) think ethics and values can be bought.

It's interesting in the light of the controversy a couple of yeares back about them hooking up with MacDonalds in which Innocent fought back with the case it was all about getting healthy drinks to the kids:
