According to German campaign group Rainforest Rescue, BP is planning to invest 4 billion Euros in Brazil for the production of sugar cane ethanol. Their first ethanol refinery started production last year and a second one is in planning.
Ethanol is lucrative, due to government targets for agrofuels. BP have actively lobbied for such targets, including in the US, EU and UK.
Sugar cane ethanol requires vast plantations which are destroying Brazil’s Cerrado savannah and threatens rainforests.
Rainforest Rescue is asking people to sign a petition against BP’s agrofuel investment: http://www.rainforest-rescue.org/index.php
