Carbon offsetting

Carbon offset providers claim that offsets are a tool for increasing ‘carbon literacy’ and funding the transition to a low carbon economy. Ethical Consumer argues they are an imaginary commodity created by deducting what providers hope happens from what providers guess would have happened. This extended report explores the controversies, assesses the merits of the best of the offset providers and offers some alternative ways forward.
