Samsung supply chain linked to coral reef erosion
Samsung was among a number of companies listed by Friends of the Earth UK as “almost certainly using tin in their mobiles that's come from Bangka Island.”
Research has found that tin mining is ravaging the tropical forests and coral reefs of Bangka Island, Indonesia, while locals have also complained that it is leading to injured miners and destroying fishermen's livelihoods.
According to FoE, “They may not have known this until we told them. We've asked them to reveal where they get their tin from but so far they haven't given us a clear answer.”
They are asking supporters to email the companies asking them to clarify their position on where their tin comes from, and to support new rules to make all companies come clean about their supply chains, starting with a Europe-wide law next year.
