Electrolux under fire for unfair dismissal of unionists in Thailand
In a new report GoodElectronics Thailand has found continuous violations of labour rights at the Electrolux Thailand Rayong Plant. Campaigners have reported a number of issues ranging from unfair dismissal of the union president and 129 union members at this facility, and Electrolux’s refusal to respect the workers’ rights to association and collective bargaining.
n the basis of considerable fact finding on the ground, including interviews with workers, GoodElectronics Thailand concluded that Electrolux Thailand is showing flagrant disregard of the Electrolux International Framework Agreement and Workplace Code of Conduct in which the company's commitment to uphold minimum labour rights standards throughout its operations are presented
GoodElectronics found that Electrolux’ management unnecessarily escalated a peaceful meeting on January 11, 2013 into a conflict, by refusing to respond to the workers legitimate concerns and unfairly and illegally dismissing the union president. When workers became upset as they faced this violation of their fundamental right to association and collective bargaining, they refused to return from the meeting and begin working and demanded that the company cease violating Thai labour law by reinstating the union president.
Electrolux proceeded to retaliate by forcibly detaining workers on the company lawn, denying the workers, two of whom were pregnant, food and drinks for more than 6 hours before dismissing them – a grave violation of the workers basic human rights and dignity and Thai Laws.
These actions cannot be seen as compatible with Electrolux stated commitments to fundamental worker rights, and the commitments made in the Global Framework Agreement.
To bring Electrolux into compliance, the GoodElectronics Thailand continues to call on Electrolux to:
Immediately reinstate all 129 workers to their former positions with full back pay;
Commence negotiations with the workers representatives to reach a proper agreement on wages and the regular employment of labour agency workers.
