In the run-up to Christmas Harvey Nichols is selling reindeer meat in many of its stores across the UK. Animal welfare campaign group Viva! is urging them to stop.

Passed off as ‘festive fun’, Viva! said the reindeer industry can cause huge amounts of suffering to what it describes as gentle wild animals. There are also growing concerns that indigenous predators – such as wolves – are being shot to protect the reindeer meat industry. Harvey Nichols claim that the reindeer its sells are farmed, but Viva! says this is also problematic as reindeer are highly susceptible to stress. Elsewhere, traditional methods of herding have given way to chasing them via snowmobile and helicopter. Viva! is calling on the public to complain to the company.
