Suicide scandals continue to plague Chinese company
Workers from a Foxconn factory in China threatened mass suicide yesterday in response to the company's refusal to pay compensation to workers. The latest protest started early in January 2012 when workers from one production line were forced to move to a new production line. According to an article in the Daily Telegraph the workers were put to work without any training, paid piecemeal and due to the speed of the production line complained of blisters on their hands. Workers also reported that the factory was very dusty making it hard for them to breathe.
Due to the conditions, workers from the production line went on strike. Initially, Foxconn, agreed to pay one month's compensation to anyone who wanted to quit, however Foxconn later withdrew the offer. This led to the workers climbing onto the roof and threatening mass suicide. The protest came to a peaceful end after Foxconn held negotiations with the workers. The company reported that 45 employees chose to resign while the rest had returned back to the production line.
