Amazon has started to pay UK corporation tax from May 2015. This is instead of paying the diverted profit tax - known as the "Google tax" - which came into force in April at a rate of 25%.

"From the start of this month the online retailer has started booking its sales through the UK, meaning resulting profits will be taxed by HMRC. The group made $8.3bn (£5.3bn) of worldwide sales from British online shoppers but for 11 years all these internet transactions have been booked in Luxembourg."

...correction. Will be paying more in corporation tax as a result of the move of sales to a UK office. They did pay £4.2m of corporation tax on revenue of £449m for 2013.

    Hi SparkyArcher,

Yes this is fantastic news and here at Ethical Consumer we are very happy to hear this news. However it doesn't mean we are going to stop encouraging people to boycott Amazon.

We are asking people to stay on the boycott for two main reasons:

Firstly we want to make sure that this is 100% going to be the case and we won't know that until around this time next year when Amazon releases more financial information.
Secondly we want to be able to respond to your wishes and so we'll be sending round a short online survey soon to see what you think is the best course of action.

It is fair to say that this is a battle well won, but the war is far from over.

    Best wishes,

    Heather
