There was an interesting news item in the latest EC about a drive to create a new consumer information certification to differentiate milk produced from dairy herds that spend most of their time outdoors. The theory is that this would enable consumers to make a more informed choice, in the same way that the highly successful movement against battery eggs has changed behaviour and improved animal welfare.

However, a very robust standard already exists:

Products are widely available from Tesco, Waitrose, Yeo Valley and others.

Do we need a new standard, or just better consumer education about what organic means?

I worry that a "free range" standard could cause confusion if people think it is more ethical than organic (and erode that market), whereas the opposite is true.
