Amazon responds and its answer isn’t good enough

Amazon has responded to campaign group Amazon Anonymous' 59,000 strong petition that was handed in to the company's head office last month.

Amazon’s said:

"Permanent UK associates start at a minimum of £7.10 per hour increasing to a median of £8.00 per hour after 24 months…Additional benefits for permanent employees include private medical insurance, a company pension plan, life assurance, income protection and an employee discount."

However campaigners say this is a glib attempt to fob them off. They argue that the letter fails to address the fact that the company employs tens of thousands of temporary contract workers to whom it pays poverty wages.

An email from Amazon Annonymous says "Even ignoring the fact that £7.10 per hour is STILL under the UK living wage rate outside London, the real problem with this reply is the word “permanent”."

They are now urging supporters to sign a new letter to the company which demands that the company:

1) Raise its baseline pay for permanent associates from £7.10/hour to the living wage rate of £7.65/hour

2) Provide information on wage rates for temporary workers

3) Commit to a meeting to discuss this petition and paying living wages.

You can send the letter from the Amazon Anonymous website.
