More on International Co-operatives Day

The day is celebrated on the first Saturday of July every year. Its aim is to increase awareness on co-operatives and promote the movement's successes and ideals of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace.

This year the theme of the day is ‘Co-operatives: The power to act for a sustainable future’. Organisers of the day, the International Co-operatives Alliance, say this theme is a nod of support to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.  The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were established in 2015 to achieve 3 main things: end extreme poverty, fight inequality and fix climate change over a period of 15 years.

As the International Co-operatives Alliance says:

"Co-operatives have a unique role to play in realizing the Goals, as they contribute to sustainable economic growth, social development and environmental responsibility. Co-operatives are important partners to achieve the SDGs, because they foster democracy, practice social inclusion and operate with concern for the environment, all while having a significant economic impact on the world economy. “

This theme sits very well with our key mission to make business more sustainable through consumer action. Our ranking system also reflects the Sustainable Development Goals as we rate companies based on a broad range of topics that address issues of poverty, inequality and environmental concerns.
