Carbon Offsetting
Carbon offset providers claim to neutralise carbon emissions from activities such as flying and driving by funding projects that reduce emissions through forestry, energy efficiency or renewable energy. Providers argue that offsets are a tool for increasing ‘carbon literacy’ and funding the transition to a low carbon economy. Critics describe carbon offsets as a smokescreen to avoid behavioural change and accuse providers of a lack of transparency. This extended report explores the controversies, assesses the merits of the best of the offset providers and offers some alternative ways forward.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) describes the principle that companies can and should make a positive contribution to society. Fair trade
As we approach the UK’s Fairtrade Fortnight 2007 beginning on the 26th February, fair trade has come a long way since the first UK certified Fairtrade product entered the market in March 1994. We now have a choice of over 2,000 Fairtrade-marked retail and catering products in this country ranging from tea, coffee and bananas, to beers, jeans (see EC 101), and sports balls. In 2005 we spent £195million pounds on certified Fairtrade products in the UK. This feature looks at the full range of fair trade and alternative ethical trading standards.
