Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) describes the principle that
companies can and should make a positive contribution to society. CSR
is the practice of managing the social, environmental and economic impacts

are not codified in law. In practice the term can refer to a wide range

Deodorants
Companies have played on our insecurities about getting smelly through clever, you might say manipulative, advertising campaigns. Major deodorant brands such as Lynx (just one spray and youll have women chasing you through the streets, apparently) package spray-on-smells as the answer to our love lives and general success as a human being. This report looks at the ethical options.
Diesel
As the oil age draws to a close, this article performs the unenviable
task of trying to find an ethical oil company. With cities, jobs and
housing designed around the car for at least the last 50 years, the
reality of a car-free lifestyle is still some way off for many people.
But if we must use the internal combustion engine for some trips is
there, in any meaningful sense, a better choice of fuel? And if our
actions as ethical consumers are somewhat constrained, what other information
might be useful to help us as citizens effectively rein in the power
of Big Oil? This report is therefore designed to discuss new political
ideas such as peak oil and biofuels as well
as looking at decisions to be made at the petrol pump. The report was
first published in 2007 and is available online to

Petrol

Soft drinks
Carbonated soft drinks have long been criticised for contributing
to both tooth decay and to obesity. A study of teenagers reported in
March last year suggested that “having just one fizzy drink a day could
equate to putting on almost a stone in a year”. Meanwhile, its
not just the sugar that rots our teeth as the acids they contain – not
just the full sugar versions – can dissolve tooth enamel. Such health
concerns have led to new restrictions on schools soft drink vending
machines. In response to the changing market, companies are concentrating
their efforts (and their considerable budgets) on producing and marketing
low-calorie versions of their drinks or on promoting healthier
formulations of their brands, but what are the impacts of our fizzy
habits? First published in 2007 in issue 105 of the magazine, price
