According to Greenpeace, Bluefin tuna is an endangered species and could soon be extinct. Populations have reduced by over 80% since industrial fishing began. Despite this it is still being served in sushi restaurants in the UK.
The longlines, gillnets and purse seines are also damaging ecosystems and catching sea turtles, seabirds and marine mammals, according to the Center for Biological Diversity.
The Center has launched the Bluefin Tuna Brigade, a campaign that is asking consumers to take a boycott pledge. 30,000 people have already signed up, stating that they will not eat bluefin tuna and will boycott any company that serves it, along with a growing number of restaurants. In the UK this include Yo! Sushi.
