The company has come in for a boycott call thanks to one of the worst environmental disasters ever to befall the United states, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The industrial disaster began in April 2010, when an undersea BP oil rig exploded, killing 11 workers. For the next 87 days, millions of gallons of oil spilled from the ocean floor at 5,000 ft beneath the ocean surface.
In 2014, a US judge ruled BP was "grossly negligent" in the lead-up to the oil spill. The judge said BP should shoulder 67% of the blame for the 2010 spill, with drilling rig owner Transocean responsible for 30% and cement firm Halliburton responsible for 3%. BP also received criticism in the aftermath of the spill for focusing on damage control rather than the clean-up effort.
The boycott has over 660,000 likes on Facebook. 'BP brands to boycott include Castrol, Arco, Aral, am/pm, Amoco, Wild Bean Cafe.'
