In May 2019 Ethical Consumer viewed the Rohto family tree on the website Hoovers.com. The company had several subsidiaries in jurisdictions that Ethical Consumer considered tax havens at the time of writing, that were considered at high risk of being used for tax avoidance purposes because of the company type.

They included an insurance company in Bermuda, and a holding company in Hong Kong with subsidiaries in China.

The company's annual report was checked but it contained no country by country tax reporting. As a result the company received Ethical Consumer's worst rating for likely use of tax avoidance strategies.
