In March 2020 Ethical Consumer viewed Kao Corporation's website and downloaded it Sustainability Data Book 2019.
The book stated that Kao would not use animal testing unless it cannot be avoided due to lack of availability of alternative methods, regulatory requirements or other similar reasons. That applied to cosmetics and other products.
It was however working on the development of alternative testing methods and used alternative tests as much as posssible. Where animal tests are used, testing is kept to a minimum.

The company received Ethical Consumer's worst rating for Animal Testing and lost a whole mark under this category.


Sustainability Data Book 2019 (4 March 2020)

In February 2020 Ethical Consumer viewed Molton Brown's website and found the following statement with regards to animal testing " We've been awarded the Leaping Bunny stamp of approval by Cruelty Free International, certifying all of our products to be free from animal tests under the International Humane Cosmetics and Household Products Standards. So that's everything from our hand washes, hand lotions, shower gels, body creams and skincare to our shampoos, hair conditioners, fragrances and candles.
We know that ethical shoppers recognise the BUAV approved Leaping Bunny as a trusted mark (it's the only international not tested on animals certification) and we're delighted to be recognised for being able to prove what we claim - that we've never tested on animals since the beginning in 1973."

Ethical Consumer considered this to be a positive policy on the issue of animal testing (unlike its parent company - Kao Group- which received a worst rating in this category).
