In April 2021, Ethical Consumer sent Bentley Organics Ltd a questionnaire, requesting information about the company’s animal testing policy. No response was received. Ethical Consumer therefore searched the company’s website for publicly available information.

The FAQ section of the website stated: ‘‘We do not test any of our end products on animals. We also make sure none of the ingredients we use are tested on animals".

As the company had an annual turnover below £10.2 million it was not expected to have an animal testing policy with a fixed-cut-off date. However it was expected to make a clear statement that it would not conduct or commission any animal testing, state that its policy applied to all products (including retailed non-own brands) and to be certified by a credible body that prohibits non-animal testing (such as PETA, Leaping Bunny or the Vegan Society).

As the company didn't have a narrative explanation about how it implemented its animal testing policy and was not certified as cruelty free by a third-party certification it received a middle rating and lost half a mark under Animal Testing.
