Q&A with Tepeo
Ethical Consumer: Tell us a bit about Tepeo
Tepeo: Tepeo is a British CleanTech company helping households make the switch to low-carbon heating. We design and manufacture heat battery boilers. These charge overnight when electricity prices are low, store electricity as heat and release warmth and hot water when you need it.
We believe everyone should have the chance to heat their home in a more climate-friendly way, whether you’re looking to move away from gas or want a less disruptive alternative to a heat pump. Not every home can fit a heat pump or handle a major upgrade, so we created a flexible, practical technology that makes sense for different types of properties.
As a certified B Corp, we hold ourselves to high standards for people and the planet, and we manufacture every boiler right here in Britain. We also work with skilled, trusted installers to make sure your switch to clean electric heating feels simple and supportive, from the very first enquiry through to aftercare.
Our aim is to give you a reliable, ethical way to enjoy comfort at home, providing a solution that’s genuinely affordable, easy to use, and better for the environment too.
EC: Why do you think you received our Best Buy Label? What separates you from other boiler providers?
Tepeo: We’re honoured to have received Ethical Consumer’s Best Buy Label. This award reflects our focus on climate action, ethical company ethos, and fair business practices. As a British B Corp, we design heat battery boilers that help households move away from fossil fuels; cutting carbon and supporting a cleaner energy future.
We’re transparent about suitability, manufacture in the UK, and invest in skilled local jobs. Our approach is always honest: if our solution isn’t right for your home, we’ll tell you. For us, ethical home heating means putting people, the planet, and integrity first.
EC: Do you see a growing demand for ethical boilers?
Tepeo: Yes, we’re seeing more people interested in where their heating comes from and how much control they have over their energy use. Many homeowners now want to move away from gas and oil, looking for options that give them more control, especially as energy costs rise.
There’s understandable caution about changing something so central to comfort, but most people still want practical, reliable systems that are sustainable and efficient, without major work or high upfront costs.
It’s also encouraging that the UK government now recognises heat batteries in its Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which has helped increase awareness and demand for these cleaner, more flexible solutions.
EC: What does “ethical business” mean to you, and how do you integrate this philosophy into your company’s day-to-day operations?
Tepeo: For us, ethical business starts with tackling climate change by designing products that genuinely help households cut carbon. Our heat battery boiler is built to make low-carbon heating realistic and accessible for more people, supporting the shift away from fossil fuels with practical solutions that fit real homes.
We’re also committed to transparency about what our technology can do, as well as what it can’t. As a B Corp certified company, we put people and the environment at the centre of our decisions. We manufacture in Britain to support local communities and reduce our footprint, and always give honest advice to customers about what’s right for their home.
We’re also proud to look after our people. Our 4.9-star Glassdoor rating reflects our supportive workplace and focus on staff wellbeing. For us, ethical business means treating others fairly, whether it’s our team, our customers, or our partners, and making sure every decision balances climate action, integrity, and real-world impact.
EC: What is the most challenging aspect of running an ethical business, and how do you overcome those challenges?
Tepeo: One of our biggest challenges has been getting heat battery boilers recognised and included in government policy, so homeowners truly have a choice. For a long time, government subsidies only supported heat pumps, making it much harder for people to hear about or access other innovative options. We’ve worked hard to highlight that heat battery boilers work for a wide range of homes, especially where heat pumps aren’t practical or wanted.
We’re pleased that heat batteries will finally be supported by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme from winter 2026, with a £2,500 subsidy. This will help create a slightly more level playing field and make clean, flexible heating more accessible. Changing policy takes time and determination, but we believe everyone should know about all the solutions available, so they can choose what’s right for them. For us, it’s about speaking up for practical, affordable climate action and making sure households are supported every step of the way.
EC: How do you engage with your customers regarding ethical and sustainability issues?
Tepeo: We engage with customers by answering practical questions about warmth, costs, and what works for their home. Our team and installer network provide clear guidance, including suitability checks and honest advice, even if our product isn’t the right fit. For us, supporting ethical and sustainable choices means being transparent, helpful, and focused on real needs, so people can make the best decision for their household and their values.
