There are many reasons why QuitGPT calls on people to stop using ChatGPT, the most popular AI chatbot in the world.
It is owned by OpenAI, which is run by the biggest donor to Trump’s MAGA Inc. in 2025. President Greg Brockman and his wife gave $25m to this political action committee (PAC), which according to QuitGPT was 26 times more than the second largest donation from a major AI company. Brockman has also contributed half of the $100m that AI-industry PAC Leading the Future uses to prevent US states from regulating AI.
Microsoft is OpenAI’s largest investor. Together the companies have provided the Israeli military with technology that can “sift through vast troves of intelligence, intercepted communications and surveillance to find suspicious speech or behavior and learn the movements of its enemies” during its attacks on Gaza.
ChatGPT is being sued for leading people into severe mental-health crises.
ICE uses a CV screening tool powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 to recruit new immigration enforcement agents. And many employees have quit OpenAI because of its leadership's lies, deception and recklessness.
It’s estimated that a question posted using ChatGPT uses 10 times more electricity than a normal search. The data centres used to power AI engines also need huge amounts of water for cooling. By not using ChatGPT (or any other AI platforms), you can also avoid adding to the negative environmental impact of AI.
QuitGPT is organised by a group of democracy activists that are “gravely concerned about AI companies contributing to the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S”. They invite people to join their Discord server to become involved in their campaign.
