Councils for Fair Tax Declaration launched

UK councils spend billions every year subcontracting services in their area.

And yet, research by Datlab (commissioned by the Fair Tax Mark) has discovered that 17.5% of UK public procurement contracts commissioned by the local and national government over the period 2014- 19 were won by businesses with connections to a tax haven. The total combined worth of these contracts was an astonishing £37.5 billion.

UK cities, towns and districts can now stand up for responsible tax conduct by signing up to the Councils for Fair Tax Declaration.

Launched by the Fair Tax Mark in July and with Oxford City Council the first to get on board, the Declaration commits cities, towns and districts to pursuing exemplary tax conduct in their affairs, requires greater transparency from suppliers, and calls on the EU and UK Governments to review legislation and support greater powers for the exclusion of tax dodgers from public procurement.

Resources for councils wanting to get involved are available from the Fair Tax Mark website.
