Company ethical profile

Ecotricity Group Limited

Founded in 1995 by Dale Vince, Ecotricity became the world’s first green electricity supplier and has consistently led the way in renewable energy innovation.

Today, it supplies 100% green electricity to homes and businesses across Britain. It is also expanding its provision of vegan ‘green gas’ – biomethane made from grass cuttings rather than animal farming byproducts.

But, how ethical is Ecotricity?

How ethical is Ecotricity?

Ecotricity is part of the Green Britain Group, a group of environmentally-focused companies controlled by Dale Vince.

Ecotricity reinvests its profits into creating new ethical businesses and supporting the growth of existing ones within the group. These include:

  • Britwind – the UK’s last remaining wind turbine manufacturer.
  • The Devil’s Kitchen – a vegan food producer supplying around 25% of the UK’s primary schools.
  • Skydiamond – a company making carbon-negative diamonds by capturing CO₂ from the air, offering a sustainable alternative to destructive and unethical mining practices that damage communities in Africa and beyond.
  • Ecotalk – an ethical mobile network that invests all its profits into rewilding and nature recovery projects.
  • Forest Green Rovers  – recognised by the UN as the world’s greenest football club, leading the way in sustainable sport.

Ecotricity scores well across most of our categories, and reliably sits close to the top of our energy guides. Below we outline some of those ratings. To see the full detailed stories, and Ecotricity's overall ethical rating, please sign in or subscribe.

Green Energy Supply

Ecotricity scored particularly well under our Green Energy Supply rating, as it actively builds new renewable generation capacity. It operates a “bills to mills” model, where customer bills support the build of new renewable energy infrastructure. At the time of writing it had built over 110MW of renewable generation infrastructure across the UK.

Company Ethos

Ecotricity received marks for its commitment to providing an environmental alternative to conventional energy providers. As a privately held company, we noted that it was less transparent around some financials than some similarly-sized firms – Ecotricity does not disclose how much its executives are paid, for example. However, the company is committed to fair treatment of its own workers, and has been certified by the Living Wage Foundation.
